It was the senior year of Denny Williams. He was going over scholarship offers with his mother. He lost his father just a year before, and it was just him and his mom. There is only one team you were allowed to scream for, Ohio State Buckeyes.
Ohio State was one of four final schools of his choice. Cincinnati, Florida, and South Carolina were the other three. But with his personal tragedies, he felt it was time to shake things up. So, Denny chose to attend and play football for the Game****s.
After injury to the starting QB, Denny was starting Game 3 as a true freshman and never looked back. He took the Game****s to a 11-2 record. First ever SEC Championship in school history, highest BC rank #3, and Sugar Bowl Champs.
The sop****re year was flawless. Denny lead the Game****s to their first ever undefeated season with their first National Championship.
With a bright future ahead of him, Denny shocked the football world. When most thought he was leaving early for the draft, they had no idea it was the baseball draft.
Denny was all state in High School in baseball. But chose the route of football. During his two years of success at South Carolina, he wanted to play baseball for the Game****s, but was denied from the football coach.
He knew going into the 2013 National Championship, it was his last game.
Denny was invited to Reds camp February 2013. It was a media circus. But Denny showed something during camp. He made the
Pensacola Blue Wahoos, the Reds AA minor league team.
Denny spent all of 2013 in AA ball, developing his skills.
He finished the season with a .289 Avg 7HR, 45 RBI's, 5 SB.
Denny was asked after the season if he was disappointed he wasn't promoted to AAA & regrets not staying with Football.
He told reporters he had a great time at South Carolina and playing football. But there is something about baseball parks he loves. Minor league stadiums in particular. He loves the travel, playing everyday. He finished with, there's no play clock in baseball.
This year, Denny attended the Reds 2014 spring training. He played ok. He still makes too many errors and doesn't see the ball well enough to play with the big boys. But, Denny was promoted to Louisville, the Reds AAA club.
It is uncertain if he will make it to the majors in 2014. His call up will depend on his play and the need for him from the Reds.
He was the most talked about person in the organization in 2013. Fans are anxious to see what this 21 yr old will do in 2014.
